About Spartan Directional
SPARTAN DIRECTIONAL, LLC under the direction of Boyd Simon, P.E. and Barry Nailling and others, is a horizontal directional drilling (HDD) company specializing in large pipe diameter sizes and extended crossings.
The niche of Spartan’s experience in horizontal directional drilling has proven to be the key to our success in overseeing drills for large diameter pipe sizes and extended crossings. Our team of employees are record holders in the HDD industry, having completed a horizontal directional bore of 11,065 feet, via an intersect, across the Texas/Louisiana border under the Sabine River and associated wetlands.
Spartan recently completed the longest-largest diameter HDD in North America with a 2,993’ drill of 54-inch pipe underneath downtown Miami Beach. The combination of our equipment, in addition to the talent assembled at Spartan Directional, LLC allows us to oversee and execute multiple large projects simultaneously.
Boyd Simon
Boyd is a Louisiana-licensed professional civil engineer, earning his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Southwestern Louisiana in 1995. He is also a Licensed Contractor in Louisiana for Building Construction; Highway, Street and Bridge Construction; Heavy Construction; Municipal and Public Works Construction; Electrical Work; and Hazardous Waste Treatment & Removal. He also holds contractors licenses in several other states in the U.S. and has over 19 years of experience in the HDD industry and nearly 25 years in the construction industry. Beginning as an estimator for a horizontal directional drilling company, Boyd learned the ins and outs of the equipment, materials, and labor required to complete a project. Only several years later was he promoted, acting as Division Manager, to turn the company around, which resulted in a successful and profitable business.

Barry Nailling
Barry is a leader in the world of big rig operations. With over 30 years of construction experience, he has been a key asset in the successful completion of numerous HDD projects. He has a niche for complex projects which include large diameter and long HDD crossings. Barry’s dedication and work ethic have made him a successful and integral part of mastering even the largest scale projects. Barry has the proven experience and leadership to oversee the most complex HDD projects.
